Bea Rescues Gollum

Gente que viene y ¡Bah!

Bea Rescues Gollum is a sudden rescue at the seaside that interrupts Bea and Diego’s argument over the chestnut trees and her treehouse commission. When a shell thrown for Gollum is swept into the sea, the dog follows it into dangerous water. Bea and Diego move from accusation to urgent cooperation: Bea risks the cold surf to reach Gollum, and Diego helps her back to shore when she can no longer manage the waves. The rescue resolves the immediate danger without resolving the conflict between them.

Accusation and sudden danger

Before the accident, Bea confronts Diego with the accusation that he had felled her chestnut trees to make her accept the treehouse project. Her anger frames the scene as a dispute about trust and pressure, not as a friendly encounter. Diego responds without appearing visibly unsettled; he picks up a shell from the sand and throws it for Gollum, who eagerly chases it and brings it back. Diego throws it again, this time toward the waterline. A gust carries it farther out to sea.

Gollum follows the shell into the water without hesitation. A large wave sweeps the dog farther from shore, and Bea and Diego lose sight of him. The change is abrupt: their argument has been about what Diego did to the trees and why Bea accepted the work, but the scene now turns on whether Gollum can stay afloat. The playful exchange between Diego and the dog has become an emergency, although the evidence does not suggest that Diego intended to put Gollum in danger.

Bea and Diego enter the water

Bea immediately calls for Gollum and runs to the shore. Diego does the same, and Bea is the first to spot the dog offshore. Gollum is panicked and struggling in the waves. His missing leg makes swimming harder, leaving him at greater risk as the current carries him out. Diego swims toward him without hesitation, but the frightened dog will not let him take hold; Gollum snaps at each attempt.

Bea decides to enter the sea as well. She removes her clothes and goes in wearing only her underwear because she does not want them soaked, then faces the cold water and advances slowly. Her complaints about its temperature register the physical cost of the effort, but do not stop it. She eventually puts her head under and swims toward Diego and Gollum. Her choice makes the rescue a bodily risk rather than a distant attempt to call the dog back: she must reach him in the same rough water where he is struggling.

Reaching Gollum and returning to shore

Once Bea reaches them, Gollum continues trying to bite anyone who comes close, including her. Bea asks Diego to distract the dog while she approaches from behind. Gollum tracks their movements, so getting hold of him is difficult. Bea finally grabs him despite the risk of being bitten. He bites her as she secures her grip; her instinctive response is to put his head briefly under the water so that he will release her. Diego protests that this could kill the dog, and Bea explains that she is trying to make him let go. She brings Gollum back to the surface at once.

The rescue leaves Bea struggling too. She cannot swim effectively and can barely find footing. Seeing that she is having difficulty, Diego comes up behind her and supports her, guiding her to a shallower stretch where it is easier to face the rough sea. They reach the shore with difficulty. As soon as Gollum touches the sand, he runs off at full speed without looking back. The episode closes the immediate danger with the dog safely ashore, but not with a lingering moment of gratitude or a settled understanding between the people who saved him.

Consequences and significance

The return to shore does not end the quarrel. Bea reproaches Diego for throwing the shell into the sea; Diego corrects her description of it as a stone and points out that he helped. That defensive final exchange keeps the rescue’s emotional result deliberately mixed. Bea and Diego have acted together under pressure, and Diego has helped her when she could not manage the water alone, but neither action erases Bea’s accusation or their disagreement over the trees and the commission.

Gollum is not a passive object in the scene: his eagerness sends him after the shell, his panic makes him resist rescue, and his biting forces Bea and Diego to adjust their approach. The dog’s missing leg makes the danger more acute, while his frightened resistance complicates the simple pattern of rescuer and rescued. The scene’s decisive shift comes through action rather than agreement. An argument gives way to shared effort when Gollum is in danger; once they are back on land, the argument returns.
